Four ways to begin

Tap one and it goes straight into the box above. Change any word you like.

The Light Beneath the Waves

The lamp at Cinder Point has burned every night for three hundred years, and tonight its beam swings wrong. Instead of sweeping across the black water toward the ships, it stops, trembles, and throws a slow pulse of pale green light straight down into the sea.

You stand in the lamp room at the top of the spiral stair, salt wind rattling the glass. Far below, the waves fold over the rocks like pages of an old book. Something beneath the surface answers: a faint green glow rises through the water, pulses three times, then sinks away into the deep.

A real opening scene

Then you choose what happens

This scene was written by TaleQuest from one line: A lighthouse keeper discovers the lamp has been signaling to something under the sea, and tonight it signals back.

Pick a branch and the story carries on from there, in your own tale.

In short: TaleQuest is a free AI text adventure game that runs in your browser: you get 30 turns a day plus the 10-scene Daily Tale, with no account, email or download. Each turn offers three choices or free typing, risky moves roll a d20, and an editable memory keeps the story consistent.

Fantasy · opening scene

The Light Beneath the Waves

Prompt: A lighthouse keeper discovers the lamp has been signaling to something under the sea, and tonight it signals back.

On the iron rail beside you lies a brass signal mirror, warm to the touch, though no sun has shone here in hours. Your grandmother's logbook sits open on the desk, its last entry written in her shaky hand: "Do not answer the light. Whatever it asks, do not answer."

  1. Pick up the mirror and angle it toward the glowing water.
  2. Read the logbook closely for any clue about the light's signals.
  3. Carefully descend to the rocks to see what is answering.

Mystery · opening scene

The Vanished Conductor

Prompt: You are a junior detective on a night train where the conductor has vanished between two stations.

The night express to Harrowmere groans through the dark countryside, its carriages swaying as you grip the brass rail of the corridor. Lantern light flickers over faded velvet seats and rain-streaked windows. Ahead, the door to the conductor's compartment stands slightly ajar, and a thin ribbon of cold air slips out from it. On the carpet beside the threshold lies a single silver button, freshly torn from a uniform coat. Tucked into the frame of the door, a small brass key hangs from a loop of red thread. Behind you, a porter's voice calls out, asking whether the conductor has come through, and his tone sounds worried, not annoyed. The train slows with a shudder; through the glass you glimpse a dark station platform sliding past with no lamps lit at all.

  1. Pick up the silver button and examine it closely.
  2. Test the compartment door and listen for any sound inside.
  3. Ask the porter when he last saw the conductor, watching his reaction.

Sci-fi · opening scene

The Silent Ring Awakens

Prompt: You wake from cryosleep on a research station orbiting an ice moon, and the crew logs end three weeks ago.

The cryo pod's lid hisses open and cold air bites your face. Warning lights pulse amber across a ceiling you don't recognize. Your joints ache, your tongue tastes of copper, and the station hums a low, uneven note, like an engine running on half its cylinders. A wall display flickers to life: STATION HALDRE-9, ORBITAL RESEARCH OUTPOST, KESSEL MOON. Below it, a crew manifest scrolls past, and beside each name a small grey word: ACTIVE, ACTIVE, LOGGED OFF.

Your pod's neighbors are dark. Seven empty cradles stretch down the bay, their frost-rimed lids all standing open.

On a clipboard bolted to the pod, a handwritten note in a shaky hand reads: "Don't trust the morning chime. Go to the lower ring."

  1. Check your pod's diagnostics and read the station's status logs.
  2. Follow the handwritten note and head for the lower ring at once.
  3. Call out over the station intercom to see who else might answer.

How to play a free AI text adventure

  1. Type a premise in one line, or pick a genre and a starter.
  2. Read the opening scene and choose one of three options — or type your own action.
  3. Risky moves roll a d20 against a difficulty number; the story follows the result.
  4. Pin names, places and items in the memory panel so the narrator never forgets them.
  5. Rewind to any earlier turn to try another path; your adventure saves on this device.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a catch?

No trial, no card, no account. The only limit is 30 adventure turns a day (the Daily Tale is extra). Paid plans exist for people who want to play longer.

Do I have to download anything?

No. It runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Your adventures save on that device after every turn.

Is it really free with no sign-up?

Yes. Free: 10 stories and 30 adventure turns a day, plus the Daily Tale — no account, no email. Your stories save on this device. Plus ($4.99/month) raises the limits; a one-off Story Pack ($2.99) adds 60 turns and 6 illustrations with no subscription.

Will the AI forget my character's name?

The narrator keeps a running summary plus a memory panel of pinned facts — names, places, items, promises. You can edit, pin or delete any fact, and pinned facts are sent with every turn, so a character who left the story stays gone.

How do the dice rolls work?

Risky choices show a difficulty number (DC). When you pick one, TaleQuest rolls a d20: a natural 20 is a critical success, meeting the DC succeeds, falling short means a setback the story has to deal with. The roll happens on our server, so it can't be re-rolled by refreshing.

What is the Daily Tale?

One short official adventure a day, the same for every player: 10 scenes, free, one run each. When you finish, you see which ending you reached, what share of players got the same one, today's leaderboard and your streak.

Is it safe for kids and teens?

TaleQuest is all-ages by design and has no mature mode to unlock. Every prompt and every reply is checked; out-of-bounds ideas are steered back into the story, and anything sexual involving minors is blocked outright. Players must be 13 or older (16 in the EU) unless a parent is using it with them.

Does anyone read my stories?

No. Private stories are never read by people unless they're reported or automatically flagged by the safety check, and they're never used to train AI models. You can delete every story and your whole account in one click on My account.
