The Light Beneath the Waves

The lamp at Cinder Point has burned every night for three hundred years, and tonight its beam swings wrong. Instead of sweeping across the black water toward the ships, it stops, trembles, and throws a slow pulse of pale green light straight down into the sea.

You stand in the lamp room at the top of the spiral stair, salt wind rattling the glass. Far below, the waves fold over the rocks like pages of an old book. Something beneath the surface answers: a faint green glow rises through the water, pulses three times, then sinks away into the deep.

A real opening scene

Then you choose what happens

This scene was written by TaleQuest from one line: A lighthouse keeper discovers the lamp has been signaling to something under the sea, and tonight it signals back.

Pick a branch and the story carries on from there, in your own tale.

In short: TaleQuest's kids story generator writes short, gentle stories for ages 5–10: simple sentences, a small problem solved with kindness or cleverness, and a warm ending. Nothing scary beyond mild suspense, every reply is safety-checked, and there's no mature mode anywhere on the site.

Pip the Snail and the Great Garden Race

Prompt: A shy snail wants to win the garden's great race.

Pip was a small snail with a big dream. He wanted to win the Great Garden Race.

Every summer, the animals of the garden lined up at the old stone wall. There was Lila the ladybug, Tomas the tortoise, and Mo the mouse. Pip always stayed at the back, hiding inside his shell.

"Maybe next year," Pip whispered. He could smell the sweet clover and hear the buzz of bees nearby.

On race morning, the starting bell rang. Tomas plodded off slowly. Lila zoomed ahead, her red wings flashing. Mo scurried through the grass. Pip poked out one eye and took a tiny step.

The Dragon Who Shelved the Stars

Prompt: The kingdom's last dragon applies for a job as the royal librarian.

The last dragon of Verrin Vale did not come to the palace with fire or thunder. She came on a grey morning in late autumn, folded small into the shape of a tired old woman with a satchel of ink-stained letters, and she asked the chamberlain for work.

Her name was Ysolde Cindermaw, though she had gone by Mistress Sooth for two hundred years. Her wings had become a shawl. Her claws had become spectacles. Only the faint scent of cloves and hot stone clung to her, and the chamberlain, who had a cold, sneezed twice and waved her in.

The royal library was a tower of pale oak and dust-gold light, its shelves rising past the reach of any ladder. The old librarian had died in summer, and the books had been drifting into disorder ever since. Ysolde walked the aisles with her hand brushing the spines, and where her fingers passed, the volumes stilled and slid into their proper places like obedient swallows.

Prince Taddeus, nineteen and bored, found her at the far window. "You're not the usual sort of applicant," he said.

The Loaf on Cobble Street

Prompt: A small-town baker finds a coded note baked into a loaf she never made.

Marisol Dane arrived at Hollis Bakery before dawn, as she always did, her boots crunching frost on the cobbles. The shop smelled of yeast and cinnamon. Her apprentice, Tobin, was still asleep upstairs, and the ovens ticked as they warmed.

On the cooling rack sat a single round loaf, dusted with flour, its crust crackled gold. Marisol frowned. She had shaped every loaf the night before, and she had counted them twice. This one was new.

She broke it open. Inside, pressed into the crumb, was a folded slip of paper, dry as parchment. Symbols marched across it in tidy rows: a crescent, a bell, three dots, a key. Beneath them, in careful ink, were the words: Ask the mill about the flour.

Marisol pocketed the note and went to the mill across the river. Old Peder Wahl, the miller, rubbed his floury hands and said nothing for a long while. Then he showed her a ledger. Every Thursday for a month, a sack of rye had been delivered to the bakery under her name, paid for in cash by someone she did not know.

  • Put your child's favorite animal, toy or place in the prompt — they become the story.
  • Use “Rewrite” with a note like “make it funnier” or “add a dragon who is scared of the dark”.
  • Print it as a PDF for a little book.

For parents and teachers

Children under 13 shouldn't use TaleQuest on their own — please sit with them. The kids genre keeps vocabulary simple and tone warm; the whole site is all-ages, and anything inappropriate in a prompt is quietly steered back to a kind story.

Teachers: the generator is handy for story starters, “what happens next?” discussions and comparing endings.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child use it alone?

Players must be 13+ (16+ in the EU). Younger children are welcome when a parent or teacher is using it with them — that's how the kids genre is designed to be used.

Is anything scary in the kids genre?

No more than mild suspense, like a lost hamster or a storm that passes. Stories always end warmly.

Is it really free with no sign-up?

Yes. Free: 10 stories and 30 adventure turns a day, plus the Daily Tale — no account, no email. Your stories save on this device. Plus ($4.99/month) raises the limits; a one-off Story Pack ($2.99) adds 60 turns and 6 illustrations with no subscription.

How long are the kids stories?

Short is about 300 words (a 2-minute read), medium about 700 and long about 1,200. You can continue any story as many times as you like within your daily limit.

Can I use the stories I generate?

Yes — what you generate is yours to read, share, print or use in your own projects. Please don't present AI-written text as human-written where that matters (school assignments, contests).

Is it safe for kids and teens?

TaleQuest is all-ages by design and has no mature mode to unlock. Every prompt and every reply is checked; out-of-bounds ideas are steered back into the story, and anything sexual involving minors is blocked outright. Players must be 13 or older (16 in the EU) unless a parent is using it with them.

Does anyone read my stories?

No. Private stories are never read by people unless they're reported or automatically flagged by the safety check, and they're never used to train AI models. You can delete every story and your whole account in one click on My account.
