Four ways to begin

Tap one and it goes straight into the box above. Change any word you like.

The Light Beneath the Waves

The lamp at Cinder Point has burned every night for three hundred years, and tonight its beam swings wrong. Instead of sweeping across the black water toward the ships, it stops, trembles, and throws a slow pulse of pale green light straight down into the sea.

You stand in the lamp room at the top of the spiral stair, salt wind rattling the glass. Far below, the waves fold over the rocks like pages of an old book. Something beneath the surface answers: a faint green glow rises through the water, pulses three times, then sinks away into the deep.

A real opening scene

Then you choose what happens

This scene was written by TaleQuest from one line: A lighthouse keeper discovers the lamp has been signaling to something under the sea, and tonight it signals back.

Pick a branch and the story carries on from there, in your own tale.

In short: Open TaleQuest, describe your hero in one line and press start: the AI game master sets the scene, plays every other character and offers three choices a turn (or type your own). Risky moves roll a d20 on the server, shown on screen, and a memory panel keeps your campaign straight. It's free for 8 turns a day plus the 10-scene Daily Tale, with no sign-up or download.

Fantasy · opening scene

The Light Beneath the Waves

Prompt: A lighthouse keeper discovers the lamp has been signaling to something under the sea, and tonight it signals back.

On the iron rail beside you lies a brass signal mirror, warm to the touch, though no sun has shone here in hours. Your grandmother's logbook sits open on the desk, its last entry written in her shaky hand: "Do not answer the light. Whatever it asks, do not answer."

  1. Pick up the mirror and angle it toward the glowing water.
  2. Read the logbook closely for any clue about the light's signals.
  3. Carefully descend to the rocks to see what is answering.

Horror · opening scene

The Night at Harrowgate

Prompt: You volunteer to close up the old county museum alone on the night of a thunderstorm.

The Harrowgate County Museum smells of dust and old rain. You are its last volunteer of the evening, and the storm outside rolls over the hills like a slow drum. Thunder shakes the tall windows, and every lamp in the entrance hall flickers once, twice, then steadies.

Mrs. Pellham, the curator, pressed the brass key into your palm before she hurried off. "Lock the east doors, check the galleries, and don't linger near Case Nine," she said, and did not explain.

Case Nine stands at the far end of the Hall of Local History, beneath a painting of a stern woman holding a lantern. Inside it rests a tin music box, its lid open, its tiny dancer frozen mid-turn. Someone has left a candle burning on the case's ledge, though the room has no windows for a draft to come through.

  1. Stride straight to Case Nine and examine the music box closely.
  2. Quietly check the east doors first, keeping your distance from the case.
  3. Light a lantern and search the gallery for the source of the candle.

Sci-fi · opening scene

The Silent Ring Awakens

Prompt: You wake from cryosleep on a research station orbiting an ice moon, and the crew logs end three weeks ago.

The cryo pod's lid hisses open and cold air bites your face. Warning lights pulse amber across a ceiling you don't recognize. Your joints ache, your tongue tastes of copper, and the station hums a low, uneven note, like an engine running on half its cylinders. A wall display flickers to life: STATION HALDRE-9, ORBITAL RESEARCH OUTPOST, KESSEL MOON. Below it, a crew manifest scrolls past, and beside each name a small grey word: ACTIVE, ACTIVE, LOGGED OFF.

Your pod's neighbors are dark. Seven empty cradles stretch down the bay, their frost-rimed lids all standing open.

On a clipboard bolted to the pod, a handwritten note in a shaky hand reads: "Don't trust the morning chime. Go to the lower ring."

  1. Check your pod's diagnostics and read the station's status logs.
  2. Follow the handwritten note and head for the lower ring at once.
  3. Call out over the station intercom to see who else might answer.

How to play a solo RPG with an AI game master

  1. Type your hero and situation in one line — “a halfling cartographer lost in a cursed forest” — or tap a starter card.
  2. Pick a genre: fantasy, sci-fi, horror or mystery.
  3. Each turn the game master describes the scene and offers three choices; pick one or type your own action.
  4. Risky choices show a difficulty number and roll a d20 — meet it to succeed; a natural 20 is a critical.
  5. Pin names, items and quests in the memory panel; come back tomorrow and continue the campaign.

ChatGPT can run a game if you paste in rules and keep reminding it, but it tends to let you win and forgets details in long chats. A dedicated AI GM rolls dice you can't talk it out of and keeps the campaign notes for you.

Make it feel like a real session

  • Give your hero a flaw and a goal: “brave but can't swim, looking for her brother”. The GM will use both.
  • Type actions, not just choices: “I bluff that I'm the duke's cousin”. Bold moves get a difficulty roll.
  • Play in chapters: every 8 turns the story closes a chapter and summarizes it — a natural place to stop for the day.
  • Fail forward: a missed roll is a setback the story has to deal with, not a game over.
  • Want a one-shot? The Daily Tale is ten scenes, the same for everyone, with a leaderboard of endings.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. 8 adventure turns a day and the Daily Tale are free with no account or email. Turns reset every day; an adventure in the middle of a chapter can finish it. A one-off Story Pack ($2.99) adds 60 turns with no subscription.

Can I play D&D solo with it?

You can play the same kind of game — a hero, a dungeon, dice — but TaleQuest uses its own rules-light d20 check and original worlds, not official D&D rules or settings.

Does the AI game master cheat on rolls?

It can't. The d20 is rolled on our server before the narrator writes the outcome, the number is shown, and refreshing doesn't re-roll.

Will it remember my campaign between sessions?

Yes. Adventures save on this device (3 free) with their memory panel and chapter summaries, so you can pick up where you left off.

Do I need character sheets or rulebooks?

No. It's rules-light: describe your hero in a sentence and play. There's no stat block or inventory screen — the story and the dice do the work.
